4. CONTACT US: We'd love to hear from you! Dear Michelle, In second grade
I learned how to write in script,
but my handwriting (penmanship) was
somewhat poor. My mother’s
response was to make me practice
writing in script, and by the end of
the year I had very good
penmanship. In the fourth
grade, several events occurred that
would have an impact on my writing
and my life. In a nutshell, I
went to Mexico to live with my
father for a year. My
father’s response to practicing
writing in script was that it was a
waste of time. He said that
printing was more legible.
While there would be many things I
would disagree with my father about
throughout my life, this wasn’t
one of them, because it made
infinite sense to me even as a nine
year old. Needless to say,
I’ve been printing ever since.
Sincerely, Joe
from San Diego Dear Joe, It
is much faster to write in a cursive
script than to print. So why
do so many people choose to print?
There are basically two reasons
people always print: At nine years
old, you had a choice: to write like
your mother in a connected cursive
style or to write in a disconnected
script (printed style) like your
father. You chose to write
like your father. Why?
By the end of third grade you had
very good penmanship, so you
didn’t need to print to be
legible. I suspect, that you
“picked-up” a trait from your
dear old dad. That trait was hiding
your emotions. And people who
write in an all-capital, block-print
style are masters of concealing
their feelings. In the United
States, men are ten times more
likely to print than women. It’s
interesting that you became a
determined printer as a 9-year old
American living in Mexico.
Beginning in the 1980’s, by order
of President Jose Lopez Portillo,
the teaching of cursive writing was
prohibited in Mexican grade
schools. As a result, many
Mexicans can no longer read or write
cursive or even sign their own name. This writer
chooses to write in an all-capital
block print style. This shows that
the writer doesn’t want others to
“read” him.

have learned a lot about myself and have
completely changed large parts of my
personality from Bart’s 'Change Your
Writing Workbook.' This
is singularly the most empowering
seminar I have ever attended. It is said
that one must love oneself before one
can love another. I would carry that
thought further to say that in order to
effectively help anyone else, one must
effectively help one’s self first.

effective means to do just that. Anne
