College Bound Written by Guest Author: Michelle Dresbold Dear Michelle
Dresbold a.k.a handwriting Dr,
I am writing to
see if you can help me understand a
little more about myself.
I’m currently a high school senior
and must make an important decision:
to choose between Japan or the
U.S.A. for school (college).
I am of
Japanese descent and love everything
about Japan. I also would like
to keep and learn more about my
culture and language but I know that
the education is better in the
United States. Is there an
answer in my writing?
Desperately
Seeking to Know in Guam
Dear Seeker,
When I was in
college, I accompanied my father on
a business trip to Japan.
While I was there, I saw many
beautiful things and learned a few
Japanese phrases, most of which
I’ve long forgotten. One
phrase that I do remember is that
“good night” was “o-yu-sue-mee.”
Now that I work with lots of
attorneys, this expression has taken
on a totally different meaning!
Let’s see if
your handwriting gives us a means to
an answer to your dilemma.
First,
do you see how the baseline (the
imaginary line underneath your
script) wavers? This up and
down movement of your baseline shows
that you can be moody. One
minute you think, “I want
this.” The next minute you
think, “No, no, no, I want
that…”
Also,
look at your personal pronoun
“I”. Notice how it
fluctuates between a printed “I”
with a top and bottom horizontal
stroke and a plain straight vertical
“I” with the top and bottom
strokes omitted. Your simple
vertical “I” without the top or
bottom strokes shows that you
believe that you must stand on your
own two feet and support
yourself. Your printed “I”
with the top and bottom horizontal
strokes shows that although you want
to be independent, you still want to
please your family and need their
support.
There’s no
need for you to have the moody
blues. You can have your sushi
and eat it too! Why not enroll
in a university in the U.S.A. and
spend your junior year in
Japan? That way you get the
best of both worlds!
